Dress appropriately and professionally. First impressions are lasting impressions. Always dress neatly, conservatively, and one step above what you would typically wear for the position. You will never be scrutinized for overdressing for an inteview. Although interviewers cannot discriminate, it is best to remove piercings (such as a tongue piercing) which may be distracting during an interview. Avoid heavy makeup, large jewelry or bracelets, flip flops, short shirts, and low-cut necklines. Finally, do not wear perfume or cologne to an interview, as some people are very sensitive to certain smells.
Listen and follow the lead of the interviewer. Not listening is one of the top five interview mistakes according to CareerBuilder.com. Listening is important because you can garner important clues from the interviewer. One of my clients indicated that she had been asked three different ways throughout the interviw how she handled stress. She gathered from these questions that the position position for which she was interviewing was very stressful, and opted to not accept the position. Finally, do not try to control the interview, but follow the interviewer's queues. I once served on an interview panel where an interviewee made every attempt to control the interview. This candidate was not offered the job. The conclusion of the interview panel was that if she was so controlling during an interview, she would most likely be controlling as an employee.
